Andy Roddick details why Carlos Alcaraz will be very dangerous at Australian Open

Roddick shares his thoughts on Alcaraz’s Australian Open chances.

Andy Roddick thinks the Australian Open conditions will probably suit extremely well Carlos Alcaraz’s game. Alcaraz, 20, stunningly missed this year’s Australian Open after sustaining a knee injury during the offseason. Although Alcaraz missed the Australian Open, he still had a big Grand Slam year, having won Wimbledon and reached the semifinals at the French Open and US Open.

This coming January, Alcaraz is expected to return to the Australian Open and make his third appearance at Melbourne Park. Previously, Alcaraz suffered an Australian Open second-round defeat in his debut two years ago, while he was beaten in the third round last year.

“This week wasn’t the best surface for Alcaraz, but the round-robin format was great for him leading into next year. He was on a three-match losing streak after losing the first match and battled back with two really good wins to steady the ship.

If, at the start of the year, you’d have said, ‘Hey, listen, you’re going to win Wimbledon’, then I think he takes that without even hearing the rest. There were some bumps in the road towards the end of the year – and maybe he learned some lessons about fitness and timelines at Roland Garros – but, all in all, what a season it’s been for him.

People forget he didn’t play Australia last year because of injury, so he has no points to defend until February. Australia will be a very good surface for him, especially if it gets hot down there. I’m curious to see how that heavy ball he hits, if it gets really warm, is going to jump off that surface,” Roddick told Betway.

In 2023, Alcaraz proved with his results that he has definitely arrived and established himself as a top favorite wherever he goes. It remains to be seen if Alcaraz can win his first Australian Open title in January.
