Alcaraz and Djokovic set to meet in the Cincinnati final.
Carlos Alcaraz respected Novak Djokovic for calling him a mix of the Big Three but noted he is fully focused on “creating Carlos Alcaraz” and not trying to replicate someone. After losing the Wimbledon final to Alcaraz, Djokovic dropped a major statement on 20-year-old Alcaraz’s game.”I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, and myself.
I would agree with that. He’s got this Spanish bull mentality of competitiveness and fighting spirit and incredible defense that we’ve seen with Rafa over the years. And I think he’s got some nice sliding backhands that he’s got some similarities with my backhands,” Djokovic said of Alcaraz after the Wimbledon final.
Alcaraz responds to Djokovic
On Saturday, Alcaraz defeated Hurkacz to set up a Cincinnati Masters final meeting against Djokovic. After beating Hurkacz, Alcaraz was asked about the comments Djokovic made about his game after the Wimbledon final.”Well, I mean, it’s great, someone like Novak says these things about you.
Someone who played against the best Rafa, against the best Roger, and says that I have some things about them, is great for me. But don’t totally agree cause I always say that I’m full Carlos Alcaraz. I didn’t put his styles like Rafa, like Roger, like Novak.
I just try to follow my own path, try to create Carlos Alcaraz. I always say that. I’m believing that I’m not the characteristics of anyone but Carlos Alcaraz,” Alcaraz said. This week, Djokovic is playing his first tournament since losing the Wimbledon final.
After losing the Wimbledon final, Djokovic said he was hoping to meet Alcaraz soon again. In his first tournament back, Djokovic put himself in a position to play Alcaraz again. It will be interesting to see if Alcaraz can claim back-to-back wins over Djokovic and win his sixth Masters title.
