Carlos Alcaraz has acknowledged that Novak Djokovic deserved to finish the 2023 season as the Year-End No 1. On the opening day of the 2023 ATP Finals, Djokovic beat Holger Rune and officially secured the Year-End No 1 ranking ahead of Alcaraz.

Throughout the year, Alcaraz and Djokovic were overtaking each other at the world No 1 position. In the end, it was Djokovic who won the battle and finished ahead of Alcaraz. “He deserves it, of course. He has won three of the four Grand Slams and has reached the final of the other.

You have won two or three Masters 1000s. He deserves it. He’s only lost five matches in the whole year, it’s amazing. And I heard that, despite everything, it was not his best year. Tremendous. I had my chances to be No 1, but I couldn’t convert them.

All I can say is that he deserves it and that I will fight him next year,” Alcaraz said.

Alcaraz says Djokovic deserves to finish as the Year-End No 1 spot
After kicking off the group stage in Turin with a win over Rune and sealing his record-extending eighth finish as the Year-End No 1, Djokovic admitted that his latest feats “means a lot” to him.

“It means a lot. You could see there were a lot of emotions on the court. I could feel it. I was very eager to win tonight’s match, get that monkey off my back. I won Paris, which put me in a much better position rankings-wise, and I knew coming into Turin I only needed to win one match.

A big goal is achieved, everything else now is a bonus,” Djokovic said of finishing as the Year-End No 1. Meanwhile, Alcaraz is off to a losing start in Turin. In his opener, Alcaraz made a positive start but then Alexander Zverev stormed back to win 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-4. Alcaraz will now likely need to win both of his next two matches in order to reach the semifinal in Turin.
