Daniil Medvedev seeks revenge against Jannik Sinner: “I can’t wait”

The Russian hopes to have revenge for his latest defeats against the Italian already at the Australian Open

Once the wait is over, the time has come to fully enjoy the spectacle of the Australian Open 2024, a tournament that started today, Sunday 14 January and will end on 28 January 2024, at the end of a truly eagerly awaited fortnight. The first Slam of the year is underway, with all the dreams, hopes and nascent rivalries between the best tennis players in the world, ready to inflame the fans’ support.

Daniil Medvedev, who has lost two finals in Australia and who with the victory of the Melbourne Major could regain the lead of the ATP rankings, is one of the contenders for the final victory. The Russian tennis player, in an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, spoke about his goals and his sporting rivalry with Jannik Sinner.

Medvedev challenges Sinner
“We are talking about the four players who in my opinion were the most consistent last season and therefore it is already a great result to be able to continue to remain in this group. I had a very good end of winter and spring, and in general I am satisfied with my 2023. Now I hope to do even better,” declared the Russian tennis player.

The ATP No.3 then talked about the growth of the Italian tennis player Sinner. “Jannik was probably the best player on the circuit in the last two months of last season: he beat Djokovic twice, he won two titles against me, he defeated Alcaraz in the semifinals in Beijing. In our matches, he found the key to hitting my weak points, but I can’t wait to find him again to take revenge. I hope to play many finals with him, it means that we will have confirmed ourselves at the highest level,” explained Medvedev.

On the pressure of reaching first place in the ranking, he explained: “It wasn’t tied to number 1: simply, a year ago in Australia after the bad defeat against Korda in the third round I realized that I was no longer myself, I wasn’t expressing the my personality. I worked on it. And I continue to do so: I hope to show you another Daniil, I spend less on the phone and play less on the PlayStation. And I’m trying to push away the negative people.”

Among the main candidates for final success there is obviously the 10-time champion Novak Djokovic, about whom however there are some doubts due to the wrist problems suffered in the United Cup. There are Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the former already crowned twice champion slam but in search of the first title in Melbourne, the second coming off an extraordinary end to the season and now ready to go all the way.
