Dejected Novak Djokovic had ‘no strength’ to answer this question to Serbian media

Djokovic was crushed after failing to lead Serbia to the Davis Cup title.

Novak Djokovic looked absolutely dejected after Serbia’s Davis Cup exit and very honestly told Serbian media that he just didn’t have the strength to summarize his year. After accomplishing great success in 2023 and breaking a couple of major records, Djokovic’s big goal was to lead Serbia to their second Davis Cup title.

On Saturday, Miomir Kecmanovic beat Lorenzo Musetti to give Serbia a 1-0 lead in their semifinal tie in Malaga. In the next match, Djokovic had a chance to seal Serbia’s win but missed out on three match points in a 2-6 6-2 5-7 loss to Jannik Sinner.

In the deciding doubles match, Djokovic and Kecmanovic suffered a loss as Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego beat the Serbian duo 6-3 6-4. “You’ll understand that I don’t have the strength now to summarize the year and talk about goals,” Djokovic told Serbian reporters when asked to summarize his year, via Sport Klub.

Djokovic classy in the defeat
After failing in his big goal to lead Serbia to the Davis Cup title, Djokovic was asked how mentally tough it was for him to come to the Davis Cup Final 8 just days after his ATP Finals win.

Djokovic didn’t want to go that route because he felt that would be making excuses. Also, Djokovic said that Sinner deserved to be shaken hand for his performance. “I won’t talk about it, it will sound like an excuse. One should give his hand to the opponent and move on.

A tough pill to swallow. All year, I was pumping myself up for this week, I was in it mentally, I tried to contribute, I was in the first match, but today was not meant to be,” Djokovic said. In 2010, Djokovic led Serbia to their first and lone Davis Cup title. It remains to be seen if Djokovic can make it all the way with Serbia in the Davis Cup next year.
