Great Britain BJK Cup captain fires warning to Emma Raducanu

Raducanu made her BJK Cup debut in 2022 April but hasn’t played in the competition since.

Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team captain Anne Keothavong is seemingly warning Emma Raducanu that “no one is guaranteed” a spot on the team. Raducanu, who is turning 21 on Monday, made her Billie Jean King Cup debut against the Czech Republic in 2022 April.

Since then, Raducanu missed the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup – the qualifier against France in 2023 April – and the 2021 US Open champion also isn’t representing her nation in their play-offs tie against Sweden this weekend.

In the absence of Raducanu, some other players stepped up as Britain impressively made the semifinal at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last year. Against Sweden, Keothavong nominated Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Heather Watson, and Harriet Dart.

Raducanu, who underwent three surgeries in May, is targeting to return in 2024.

Keothavong warns Raducanu
“I don’t think anyone can guarantee a spot on this team. They set the bar high for the others who want to be on this team, which is good.

But everyone’s hungry and everyone wants to be part of that, so for me as captain, hopefully, we’ll be spoilt for choice,” Keothavong said when asked whether a fit and ready Raducanu would be returned to the British team.

Earlier this year, Raducanu drew some ire when she preferred a tournament in Stuttgart ahead of Britain’s tie against France. “Because of my existing injuries, the best medical advice was to not switch surfaces at such short notice.

So that’s what I’ve been told. Of course I would love to play the Billie Jean King Cup. It’s just this scenario is not the best for my body. I really need to look after myself and do what’s best for me on the match court,” Raducanu said earlier this year when facing a backlash for her decision not to represent her country against France.
