In the press conference, the Italian talked about his win over Yoshihito Nishioka
Jannik Sinner reached the quarterfinals at the China Open 2023, analyzing his physical condition quite honestly. After the complicated match against Daniel Evans, due to a flu condition and a precarious physical condition, the Italian needed answers at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing.
Sinner showed that he has made significant improvements in his search for top form and eliminated Yoshihito Nishioka with a resounding 6-2, 6-0. Sinner will face Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals, who defeated Holger Rune in straight sets.
For Sinner this is a special victory, because he became the first Italian tennis player able to win more than 45 matches in a single season for the third consecutive year. No Italian player had ever managed to accomplish a feat of this magnitude.
Sinner’s words after the victory against Nishioka
In the press conference, the Italian explained: “Things certainly went well today. When I arrived, the first two days in particular, I didn’t feel well physically. I tried somehow to get through the first round and then I had a free day.
Every day is different, now I feel much much better physically. When I have the opportunity to compete in this physical shape, playing my tennis becomes easier. I played well today, I probably need to improve on serve, especially from a percentage point of view.
Otherwise, however, things went well. There were key moments during the Daniel Evans match that gave me confidence. Today, for example, it felt like playing a match in indoor conditions: there was no wind and the ball was slightly slower than the matches played in the morning.
I handled the situation really well. I feel good when I play on these courts. They are a little different than the others. I didn’t play any tournaments last week, so I can’t make comparisons. I have a feeling it all depends on how warm it is.
After a couple of games, the balls became slower and I had to adapt. I love the atmosphere here in China. I haven’t had much time to adapt since I arrived, but I also played doubles today and that helped me a lot. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m trying to get used to it. I hope to make progress tomorrow too.”
