Nick Kyrgios identifies what makes Novak Djokovic ‘one of greatest athletes’

Kyrgios speaks extremely highly of Djokovic.

Nick Kyrgios thinks Novak Djokovic’s ability to adapt well to pretty much any situation or condition on the court is a major reason why the Serb is “one of the greatest athletes.” Djokovic, a record 24-time Grand Slam champion, is widely considered one of the mentally toughest players, with many believing the Serb’s mental game is the strongest on the Tour.

Throughout his career, 36-year-old Djokovic has played lots of tight semifinals and finals on the biggest stage – in most cases, he was able to find a way to win. A lot has changed on the Tour since Djokovic lifted his first Grand Slam title but the Serb has always found a way to adapt and continue winning.

“This is one of the only sports in the world where you don’t know how long the match will go, It could be an and half, it could be four hours, plans change. You have to be able to adapt that’s why for me, Novak is one of the greatest athletes, it’s not like football where play a certain 90 minutes,” Kyrgios said on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV.

Kyrgios on how Djokovic beat him in the 2022 Wimbledon final
Throughout the entire 2022 Wimbledon, Kyrgios was playing great tennis and he ended up making his first Grand Slam final. Although Kyrgios was playing his first Slam final against Djokovic, he came out playing great tennis and he won the opening set.

Kyrgios continued to play at a very high level for the remainder of the match but Djokovic somehow still won in four sets 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (3). “His composure in certain moments where another player would have started to panic, he didn’t show me.

He’s calmer. You can’t rush him. He’s more patient. You can’t teach that. It comes from experience,” Kyrgios said in Netflix’s tennis documentary Break Point.
