Fognini is never afraid to tell the real truth.
Fabio Fognini hilariously revealed that he used to “cheat many times” during school exams. Fognini, one of the most interesting personalities on the Tour, is known as someone who is never afraid to speak what’s on his mind or tell honestly how he feels about certain things.
This week, Fognini went to Metz for an ATP 250 indoor tournament, where he received a main draw wildcard. In Metz, Fognini took part in a 60-second Q&A session. “Have you ever cheated during an exam,” the interviewer asked Fognini.
Fognini responded: “Cheating? So many times… (laughing).”
Fognini won his Metz opener
Fognini, a former world No 9, made a positive start in Metz after beating 74th-ranked Thiago Seyboth Wild in a tight two-setter 7-6 (3) 7-6 (9).
Early in the match, Fognini faced pressure on his serve but managed to save a break point in the first game and another in the third game. As no more break points were seen in the first set, the opener had to be resolved in a tie-break.
In the first-set tie-break, Fognini won three consecutive points early on to open a 4-1 lead. Seyboth Wild won the next two points but then Fognini won three points in a row to seal the first set. After winning a tight first set, Fognini also earned the first break of the match in the third game of the second set.
Down by a set and a break, Seyboth Wild broke back Fognini in the fourth game. Fognini broke Seyboth Wild in the seventh game but the Brazilian again got the break back a game later. In the 10th game – in which Fognini was serving to stay in the second set – the Italian saved two set points.
The match went into another tie-break, where Fognini missed out on his first two match points. But after missing out on his first two match points, Fognini also saved Seyboth Wild’s third and fourth set points. Fognini then earned his third match point, which he realized for a two-set win.
